FREE FISHING DAY EVENT AT LAKE MEAD

Folks who have wanted to give fishing a try but have held off because they didn’t want to pay for a fishing license no longer have an excuse. June 14 has been set aside as Free Fishing Day in Nevada, and that means people can try their hand at casting a line without having to shell out a few bucks to do so.

“It’s your one chance during the year to get hooked for free,” said Ivy Santee, aquatic education coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW). “No license or trout stamp is needed, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re an adult or a child. Of course all limits and other regulations still apply.”

As part of Free Fishing Day, people also have the option of participating in a fishing clinic to be held that morning at the Hemenway fishing point on the shore of Lake Mead. This event is a chance to learn more about fishing regardless of skill level, and the first 400 kids between the ages of 12 and 15 will receive a tackle box and have the chance to win one of 120 prizes. The kids will also have the opportunity to learn about Nevada’s wildlife and to earn their Junior Ranger badges by completing a Fishing Passport booklet.

The Free fishing Day event is a joint effort between NDOW and the National Park Service along with the Bureau of Reclamation and the University of Nevada Las Vegas Public Lands Institute. Joining these agencies are members of local fishing organizations whose desire is to see people enjoy the sport of fishing.

“Kids who take part will also have the chance to test their casting skills and participate in a number of fun activities. If someone doesn’t have a fishing rod and reel we will loan them one of ours. We will also have plenty of bait and other tackle on hand should someone need it,” Santee said.

Event registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the fishing clinic will get underway at 9 a.m. Participants will learn how to cast properly, identify sports fish and fish responsibly. Activities will also include knot tying, fish art and wildlife identification. Lake Mead entry fees will be waived for those who mention they are at the lake for the Free Fishing Day event.
