A DAY IN THE OUTDOORS JUST FOR WOMEN
Women who are new to the world of outdoor sports,
as well as those who are still on the outside looking in, will have
a chance to get their feet wet at a “Women in the Outdoors”
workshop Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event
is sponsored by the Las Vegas chapter of the National Wild Turkey
Federation, with the Nevada Department of Wildlife as co-host, and
will be held at the Spencer Kimball Boy Scout Reservation just outside
of Las Vegas near Mt. Potosi.
Women are discovering that hobbies such as camping, hiking, fishing,
kayaking, hunting, shooting, and bird watching are fun ways to reconnect
with the special people in their lives. Oftentimes women –
especially those who live in urban areas – don’t have
the opportunity to learn about the outdoors. So the National Wild
Turkey Federation sponsors daylong events throughout the U.S. and
Canada where women can receive expert instruction and have the chance
to try a variety of outdoor activities. These events offer women
a relaxed, noncompetitive environment where they can try something
new.
Early bird registration is $50 per person if postmarked by Aug.
30 and $60 thereafter. A mother and daughter duo can get in for
$80, but the daughter must be 14 to 17 years old. Participants must
register no later than Sept. 20. Registration forms can be obtained
online at www.womenintheoutdoors.org/wito/eventPDFs/280011.pdf or
by calling Wendy Andersen, 951-600-9268; Jessica Johnson, 702-204-8127;
or Margie Klein, 702-486-5127 x 3502.
With paid registration participants may attend their choice of
four classes and will receive lunch and access to the sporting equipment
required to participate in the classes they choose. They will also
receive a one-year membership to the Women in the Outdoors program
and a one-year subscription to the magazine of the same name.
Participants will have their choice of approximately 16 workshops
taught by volunteers and staff from the Nevada Department of Wildlife,
as well as talented members of the outdoor sporting community. Subjects
include archery, camping, canoeing, Dutch oven cooking, fishing,
introduction to hunting, shotgun shooting, wildlife identification
and more. In addition, there will be a silent auction and raffle
for some great outdoor gifts.
The Kimball Boy Scout Reservation is located at 10877 Mt Potosi
Canyon Road, 20 minutes west of Las Vegas on Highway 160, also known
as Blue Diamond Road, en route to Pahrump. Outdoor enthusiasts can
check the NDOW Sportsmen’s Calendar at www.ndow.org/about/calendar
for additional events.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) protects, restores and
manages fish and wildlife, promotes fishing, hunting, and boating
safety. NDOW’s wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are
primarily funded by sportsmen’s license and conservation fees
and a federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear. Support wildlife
and habitat conservation in Nevada by purchasing a hunting, fishing,
or combination license. For more information, visit www.ndow.org.
