INTERMEDIATE FLY-FISHING CLASS IN SOUTHERN NEVADA

Nevada’s Department of Wildlife and Division of State Parks are teaming up to offer a free fly-fishing class for those who already have a basic knowledge of the sport. This three-day course will address some of the more difficult aspects of fly-fishing, including float tubing basics, reading the water, line mending and proper catch-and-release techniques.

The class is scheduled for Aug. 13 – 15 at Spring Valley State Park so those wishing to participate should be prepared to travel and camp overnight. Spring Valley State Park is located about 20 miles east of Pioche in Lincoln County. Instruction will get underway with an evening lecture on Friday at the park campground and continue Saturday morning at Eagle Valley Reservoir. Here participants will learn the proper and safe use of float tubes and pontoon boats for fishing ponds and lakes, as well as techniques for fishing moving water such as streams and rivers.

On Sunday, participants will have the opportunity to test their new-found skills with some hands-on fishing experience so a current Nevada fishing license with a trout stamp is required. Those can be purchased online at www.ndow.org or at license vendors. Loaner float tubes, fins, and life preservers will be available for student use, but students should try and have their own chest waders and boots. Rods and reels will also be available for student use. Space is limited. Registration will begin Monday, Aug. 2 at 8 a.m. Call Ivy Santee (702) 486-5127 x 3503.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) protects, restores and manages fish and wildlife, promotes fishing, hunting, and boating safety. NDOW’s wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are primarily funded by sportsmen’s license and conservation fees and a Federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear. Support wildlife and habitat conservation in Nevada by purchasing a hunting, fishing, or combination license. For more information, visit www.ndow.org.
