FINGERLING TROUT SET TO GRADUATE FROM CCSD

Approximately 200 rainbow trout that were hatched from eggs and raised in a tank at the Clark County School District Curriculum and Professional Development Office are getting ready to graduate. The fry – baby trout – will be released into the south end of the pond at Sunset Park on Thursday, March 26 at 3:30 and anyone who is interested is invited to come.

The tank was set up as part of the Nevada Department of Wildlife Trout in the Classroom program in partnership with the school district because not every classroom can have its own tank. Through this project students have been able to view the tank with the aid of a webcam via the Internet. After logging in, students could observe the eggs and then monitor the development of fish after the eggs hatched. Students, and anyone else who is interested, can also view a slideshow documenting the transition from egg to fish. This can be done online at www.cpd.ccsd.net/TiC/index.htm.

Trout in the Classroom is designed to teach fourth, fifth and sixth grade students about the life cycle of rainbow trout, and with the curriculum and equipment provided by NDOW they can do so right in the classroom. Once the fry – juvenile trout -- are old enough, participating students release their fish into a local pond where trout are stocked by NDOW. Currently, there are about 50 Clark County schools participating in the Trout in the Classroom program.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) protects, restores and manages fish and wildlife, promotes fishing, hunting, and boating safety. NDOW’s wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are primarily funded by sportsmen’s license and conservation fees and a federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear.
