Black bears hibernate. That means that they find a cozy, dark place, or a den, to sleep in the cold winter when food might be hard to find. A good den might be a cave or a hollowed out log. A lot of times in the winter, a den will get covered with snow. This bear chose to make his den under somebody's deck. Bear Den
Bears eat a lot of food before they hibernate. They have to eat more than 20,000 calories every day to stock up on energy before they hibernate for the winter.

For you, that would be like like eating 8 LARGE pepperoni pizzas every day! But remember - NEVER FEED BEARS! Human food is bad for bears, and feeding bears isn't safe for you or the bear.
bear eat
Black bears eat both plants and animals. They are omnivores. They like grass, berries, and blossoms. They also dig up grubs (worm-like bugs), catch fish and small mammals and may eat dead meat that they find in the forest.

You should never feed a bear human food.
Food
Black bears are not always black.

They also come in shades of brown and can sometimes look almost blonde. This black bear has three different shades of colors on her coat.
Bear Run
Black bears are different than brown bears (grizzly bears).

Remember - Nevada only has black bears. Black bears have bigger ears a long nose. They have a straight line running between the forehead and the tip of the nose. The ears of black bears are larger and more pointy.

Grizzly or brown bears have a round face with a kind of dent between the eyes and the end of the nose. Grizzlies also have short rounded ears. When you look at a grizzly bear from the side, you should see a hump on their shoulder. Black bears do not have this hump.
