Forest Service to Implement North Schell Restoration Project

Ely, Nevada…

The Ely Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is preparing to begin work on the North Schell Restoration Project. Prescribed fire operations will begin towards the middle part of October and smoke may be visible for the next couple weeks. We will have personnel patrolling the project area to ensure the burned areas are secure.

Prescribed burning will be implemented within the aspen stands that are encroached with conifers in the Indian Creek and Third Creek areas. These project areas are located on the westside of the Schell Creek Range on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, in White Pine County, Nevada. The project is approximately 40 miles north of the town of Ely. Access to some roads and trails maybe restricted during the implementation stage of the project.

The objectives are to reduce conifer encroachment and regenerate the aspen communities, improve wildlife habitats, and lessen the potential severity of future wildfires.

Please contact Ely District Ranger, Jose Noriega at (775) 289-5100 or by cell phone at (775) 289-0176 or Jimmy Flanagan, Fuels Tech at (775) 289-5132 for further information.

Update: Prescribed burning will begin October 22
