The following criteria will be considered in evaluating nominees:

  • Time and depth of commitment to conservation, management, or enhancement of wildlife in the state of Nevada during the current calendar year.

  • Quantity and quality of measurable results for wildlife conservation.
  • Obstacles, difficulties and personal sacrifice involved in meeting wildlife conservation goals.
The winner of the 2004 Kirch award was Ray Lister. Lister, an avid sportsman, has been working for the betterment of Nevada’s wildlife for more than 24 years. During 2004, Lister, a wildlife/fisheries team leader with the Bureau of Land Management in Elko, was involved in many wildlife-related issues, working with conservation and sportsmen’s groups such as Trout Unlimited, Elko Bighorns, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the Mule Deer Foundation. During 2004, Lister was instrumental in installing five new water guzzlers (water sources for all types of wildlife), reconstructing one and retrofitting two other guzzlers with pipe rail fencing to help prevent wild horses from causing damage to the guzzlers. Additionally, Lister has recruited many volunteers to assist with these projects donating time, money and materials.

The conservation award consists of a perpetual bronze and wood plaque, on which that year's recipient's name is added. Each winner also receives a smaller version of the award to keep.

This award is named in memory of Wayne E. Kirch, who served on the Fish and Game Commission for over 25 years, the longest tenure on the board since its inception in 1877. The Kirch Wildlife Management Area in southern Nevada is also named in his honor. Kirch, of Las Vegas, passed away in 1989.
