WILDLIFE COMMISSION TO CONSIDER WATERFOWL HUNT CHANGES
Minor changes to the upcoming waterfowl hunts and the setting of regulations
and bag limits for the 2004-2006 fishing seasons will be discussed by
the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners during a Sept. 26-27 meeting
at the Bristlecone Convention Center in Ely.
Commissioners will consider a one-day closure of hunting for ducks, mergansers, coots, gallinules, moorhens and snipe on Oct. 16 in order that Nevada’s hunting regulations conform with a hunting framework that has been established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Other slight changes to the waterfowl regulations are being proposed as well. The changes do not affect the youth waterfowl hunt that will be held Sept. 27 in all Nevada counties except Clark and Lincoln.
The meeting will begin at
8:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, with a variety of reports to be heard by
commissioners, including elk sub-plans for central Nevada and Lincoln
County, the Governor’s Sage Grouse Team, wind generation projects
and small game water developments. There will also be reports on the Nevada
Department of Wildlife’s volunteer program, the agency’s law
enforcement program, Carson Lake and pasture and conceptual management
plans for Steptoe Valley and Wayne E. Kirch wildlife management areas.
On Saturday, Sept. 27, commissioners will meet at 8:30 a.m. and will hear
a report on plans for predator management during 2004 and will discuss
the waterfowl hunt changes as well as set fishing seasons and bag limits
for the period of March 1, 2004 through Feb. 28, 2006.
Other agenda items to be discussed on the second day of the meeting include the implementation of a mandatory boating education program as designated by the Nevada Legislature, establishment of a nonresident mountain goat hunt, reduction in the amount of time that hunters will have to submit their big game return cards and hear a report regarding a petition from the Nevada Outfitters and Guides Association on bobcat hunting. They will also hear a proposal to allow the noncommercial collection of northern spotted frogs, authorize the sale of fathead minnows by permitted bait dealers in the western region of Nevada and change the status of the bullfrog to unprotected.
The meeting is open to the
public and public comment periods will be held each day.
