NDOW CAN HELP WITH YOUR HOLIDAY SHOPPING

As the Holiday shopping season heats up, people everywhere are coming to grips with one of life's well known facts…hunters are impossible to shop for.

If you are still searching for the perfect gift for your sportsman, the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) has some ideas that might help.

The sixth edition of the Nevada Wildlife Record Book has just arrived and is ready for purchase. The book is published by the Nevada Wildlife Record Book Committee, whose purpose is to keep comprehensive records of wildlife species, native and introduced, harvested in the state of Nevada. The record book program also recognizes outstanding trophies in size and symmetry, promotes the hunting of quality big game animals, and maintains geographic records of areas where trophies are taken. Awards are given for highest ranked trophies in 10 categories of animals. With stories, pictures, and historical and educational information, the book would be a great gift for hunters, young and old.

Only 3000 copies of the book have been published, so each copy is considered a limited edition. The book goes for $50.00 and is available at all NDOW offices or can be ordered from the Record Book Committee at www.nevadarecordbook.com, or P.O. Box 1707, Reno, NV 89505.

According to NDOW Administrative Assistant Kathleen Teligades, "The purchase of a 2010 Record Book includes the bonus of a 2005 record book free of charge."

Along with the record book, the committee also publishes the Nevada Wildlife Record Book Field Guide, which goes for $20. This is a companion volume to the record book, and is designed to be taken on scouting and hunting trips. It includes photographs of trophy animals, as well as field judging guidelines, which can be used by hunters to determine the quality of a trophy in the field. Blank score sheets compliment the package. Field guides may be purchased in the same manner as the record books.

Finally, the Nevada Wildlife Water Development (Guzzler) Atlas for a hunter or any outdoor enthusiast. The atlas provides 58 maps that show guzzler points for both big and small water developments. Guzzlers are precipitation collection devices built in suitable wildlife habitats to provide an additional source of water for wildlife of all types and sizes. The structure collects snow and/or rainwater in an "apron" and stores it in tanks; the tanks then feed the water to a drinker that can be accessed by wildlife.

Currently, there are more than 1,500 guzzlers to visit (292 large guzzlers and 1,256 smaller guzzlers) in the state. The Atlas can be purchased at your nearest NDOW office for only $40. For an additional $10, you can add a sheet that includes the GPS coordinates for each guzzler as well.

Sportsmen and women can also give the gift of fishing by printing up a Fish Trip IOU coupon promising to take the recipient fishing.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) protects, restores and manages fish and wildlife, and promotes fishing, hunting, and boating safety. NDOW's wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are primarily funded by sportsmen's license and conservation fees and a federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear. Support wildlife and habitat conservation in Nevada by purchasing a hunting, fishing, or combination license. For more information, visit www.ndow.org.
