FREE FISHING DAY EVENTS ON TAP SOUTHERN NEVADA

June 12 is Free Fishing Day, the one day each year when anyone can fish in Nevada waters without first purchasing a fishing license. To celebrate, the Nevada Department of Wildlife and its partners are hosting a Free Fishing Day event for anglers of all ages and experience levels at the Boulder City pond in Veteran’s Memorial Park.

In addition to fishing, the event also will include informational booths on topics ranging from bait and lure selection to casting skills, fish identification to fish art, and desert wildlife to boating safety among others. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. with activities starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 11 a.m.

“Our goal is to provide participants not only with an opportunity to catch fish, but also an opportunity to learn about fish and fishing as well as other items of interest,” said Ivy Santee, NDOW angler education coordinator. “This new location offers a comfortable environment for doing just that.”

Joining NDOW as event partners are the Boulder City Parks and Recreation Department, Bureau of Reclamation, National Park Service and the Public Lands Institute. The first 300 kids will receive a goody bag and tackle box. Participants are free to bring their own tackle or they may check out a loaner fishing rod from NDOW. There is no charge for using the fishing rods; however, their number is limited.

For those who are looking to get out of town and experience cooler climates, Echo Canyon State Park will be holding a Free Fishing Day Derby from 8 a.m. to noon. Rangers at the park have a reputation for putting on a great event complete with prizes, raffles, food and other options. Echo Canyon is located just east of Pioche in Lincoln County.
