Hunting
Big Game Information, Draw Odds and Statistics

Hunters are continually inquiring about the best areas to hunt for a particular species and what their odds are for drawing a tag in a certain unit. The information provided in this section attempts to provide hunters with useful information that may help answer those questions. Click the links above to go to the desired section, or read on to learn more.

The 2003 Big Game Status Book that gives topical information about big game herds is available at regional NDOW offices for $10. Call your regional office for availability.

Species / Unit Information Sheets

The Species / Unit Information section allows interested parties to find detailed information about specific units in relation to a certain species. These information sheets include descriptions about the unit location and description, hunter access, recommended hunting areas and more helpful or pertinent information. Hunters can choose to look at information sheets for a particular species in a particular region (west, east, south) or view all available information sheets.

Big Game Hunt Statistics and Draw Odds

The Big Game Hunt Statistics and Draw Odds Section provides statistical data for mule deer, elk, antelope, bighorn sheep and mountain goat. This includes the total number of tags sold, the draw odds, the percentage of hunters who drew a tag and were successful in harvesting an animal, and other species specific data like percentage of hunters who harvested a 6 point bull, for example.

The 2002 - 2003 Big Game Status Book is available in our regional offices for sale. This book will provide you 2002-2003 summary of populations status trends, habitat and biologist survey data for each of the units and game categories.

Bonus Points

The bonus point data shows how many applicants were successful in each bonus point category, 10 bonus points being the highest number any applicant had in the 2002 drawing. Because the draw numbers that determine whether or not a hunter draws a tag are generated randomly, there is no guarantee that a hunter will draw a tag for the unit group of his or her choice just because he or she may have more bonus points then anyone else.
