The Application

Applications for Hunter Education volunteer instructors are available at the Reno, Fallon, Elko, and Las Vegas NDOW offices. Return the envelope to the regional hunter education contact in your area:

Regional Hunter Education Contacts:

Western Nevada: Chris Vasey, (775) 688-1622

Eastern Nevada: Joe Doucette, (775) 777-2305

Southern Nevada: Martin Olson (702) 486-5127 ext. 3501

The Background Check

Once NDOW receives your application, it is then sent in for a background check. This takes two working days. Once you have cleared the background check, your information is entered into the computer and you’re given an instructor number. At this point you’re an active instructor. You can help teach classes and participate in any of the training or instructor activities. You will also begin receiving the instructor publications.

The Instructors Packet

NDOW sends you an instructors packet with a confirmation letter, copies of the publications, a training tape, a copy of the Instructors Guide, an Instructors Handbook and a Workbook.

The Workbook

The workbook you will receive will help get you familiar with the instructor materials, the ins-and-outs of setting up and conducting a Hunter Education class, the rules and procedures of Hunter Education in Nevada, and how to solve any problems that might come up in your classes.

The Training

There are three types of training for Nevada Hunter Education instructors. You must participate in new instructor training before being certified, but you only have to do it once. Then, you can attend in-service (mid-winter dinners) and the Academy as often as you wish. You will need to attend training at least once every two years to maintain your certification.

The Classes

You must help teach two classes with a certified instructor in order to become certified. You will need to teach at least one class every two years to maintain your certification.

Certification

Once you’ve completed all the above steps, you will receive certification from NDOW.
