Nevada is made up of four main ecoregions that are are based on climate, water, soils, air, hydrology and potential natural vegetation communities. The four ecoregions are the Columbia
Plateau, the Great Basin, the Sierra Nevada, and the Mojave Desert.
There are 314 mountain ranges in Nevada, creating a vast expanse of basin and range landscapes. Among the 50 states, Nevada ranks 11th in overall biological diversity.
Vast mountainous expanses of sagebrush represent a dozen different species and many more subspecies. Many of the species here have adapted to blend in with the rocks and vegetation to avoid detection in a land that holds few hiding places.
