Fishing Report: 2/2/23

This young and determined angler named Lorenzo was the first of his family to reel in a nice rainbow trout at Comins Lake last weekend during the annual Ely Rotary Club Ice Fishing Derby. Even more exciting, this was Lorenzo’s first Nevada catch! Anglers at the derby had great success with trout and even a few bass using combinations of PowerBait, worms, and ice jigs.

Eastern Region

Ice fishing season is in full swing in eastern NV. If you’re in the Elko area, your top two hotspots will be Wild Horse Reservoir and South Fork Reservoir. If you’re closer to Ely, Comins Lake will be the hotspot. Wild Horse Reservoir is busy with anglers landing limits of rainbow trout. Anglers are reporting up to 15″ of ice near the boat ramp, with the possibility of thinner spots around. South Fork Reservoir anglers are also having success with rainbow trout along the southwest shores and Tomera Cove. Ice is measuring 9”- 10” in the thickest areas. Comins Lake is averaging 12″ of ice in the thickest areas, with pockets of weaker ice present. Anglers are landing 14”-18” inch rainbows, the occasional brown trout and tiger trout, and even a bass here and there. A FEW REMINDERS… (1) Always exercise caution, drill test holes, and bring safety equipment. No ice is guaranteed to be 100% safe. (2) Ice fishing holes must not exceed 10 inches in diameter (NAC 503.583). (3) Check the regulations! Know the limits for each species at each water.

WesterN Region

Fishing has been good even with the rough start to winter. Every one of our northern fisheries could really use a good wet winter. Keep the snow coming! The below average temperatures have many of our community ponds and lakes already covered in ice. The open water left is likely going to be pretty solid after the next week of below freezing temperatures expected. Low flows on the Carson and East Walker rivers combined with the extreme cold is going to really slow things down. The Truckee will likely be the best option until we see a few sunny days in a row in the upper fifties. East of Reno anglers are still doing well on diving plugs and streamers. Fish are concentrated in deeper water with the low flows but so are their food sources.

Lake Mohave/Willow Beach

Anglers fishing after dusk have been rewarded with catfish in the 2- to 3-pound class. Jointed shad baits have been fooling bass at the south end of Cottonwood basin. Pencil poppers are a favorite for stripers around Telephone Cove.
