Recovering America’s Wildlife Act (H.R. 2773, S. 2372) are federal bills that would provide states with up to $1.4 billion each year to more fully implement State Wildlife Action Plans. If passed, Nevada would receive approximately $24 million. Combined with state-provided match, the Nevada Department of Wildlife would have more than $32 million each year to conserve and manage our natural resources. Nevada’s current State Wildlife Action Plan prioritizes 22 key habitats and 256 species, including mule deer, bighorn sheep, sage grouse, waterfowl, songbirds, reptiles, native fish and amphibians, and many mammals. Increased funding will enhance our wildlife management and conservation efforts, and enhance funding for law enforcement, conservation education, recreation, and habitat restoration in addition to management of priority species.
In January of 2022, the House bill passed out of the Water, Oceans and Wildlife Subcommittee on a bipartisan 29-15 vote. In April, the Senate bill passed out of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on a bipartisan 15-5 vote. Next, both bills go to a Floor vote, reconciliation (S.2372 identifies a funding source; H.R.2773 does not), and then to the President’s desk to be signed into law.
