Argenta Wildlife Management Area

Located just a few miles from the center of Battle Mountain, this property is an exceptional and easily accessible recreation area in Lander County. Previously known as the Licking Ranch, it was owned and operated by the Licking family from the 1880’s to the 1960’s. Since then, three different families have owned the land before it was purchased as a Wildlife Management Area by NDOW in 2022. The willow and cottonwood lined property consists of 1,568 acres of riverine habitat, with both the Humboldt River and Rock Creek passing through. On wet years, the riverbanks and meadows come alive with thousands of songbirds, shorebirds and waterfowl migrating along the Pacific Flyway. Over 92 species of birds have been observed, including Willow Flycatchers, Sandhill Cranes and a Ferruginous Hawk. Since 2004, over 150 Rio Grand Turkeys have been released, allowing for an average of 5 tags issued to hunters each spring. In addition to an abundance of bird sightings, visitors may also encounter resident populations of mule deer and pronghorn antelope, as well as the occasional nomadic rocky mountain elk.
